The pinnacle of free finds in LA lies perched above the city peering down towards Westwood and Santa Monica. The J. Paul Getty Museum in Brentwood boasts a range of exhibits you would expect to discover at the Louvre or El Prado. And did I mention it is free!!!!!!!

96. Wine and dine in Little Ethiopia

If you can’t make it to Africa this summer, you may find what you are looking for in LA’s Little Ethiopia. Located between Whitworth Drive and Olympic Boulevard on South Fairfax Avenue, Little Ethiopia is a quaint block-long strip that “transports passersby to a distant land.” (LA Times)

Restaurants, clothing stores and antique furniture shops line the street. And you if haven’t tried Ethiopian food, I highly recommend scooping vegetables with Injera at Messob.

98. Pay your respect to those that have already taken the plunge.

Most cemeteries with celebrity gravesites offer maps and/or have staffers to answer specific questions (i.e. “Where’s Marilyn Monroe?”). However, the two Forest Lawn Memorial Parks provide maps only and have forbidden employees to answer celebrity questions.

Marilyn Monroe, dressed in a green Pucci dress and a platinum blonde wig, is buried in a simple wall crypt, no. 24, along the “Corridor of Memories” at Pierce Bros. Westwood Village Memorial Park in Westwood.

Fan clubs have donated the memorial bench nearby. Dean Martin, Natalie Wood, author Truman Capote and musician Frank Zappa also are buried in this cemetery.

Per a conscientious observer…

99. Buy a Vinyl at Amoeba

No Angelino ever thought they’d live to see the day when Tower Records on Sunset Strip would close its doors for good. But after the emergence of internet piracy and “big-box” stores like Wal-Mart and Circuit City rolled into town like a band of hyenas, pillaging local business, leaving nothing but a trail of 89 tower chains stripped bare in their wake, the storied record retailer was forced to sell their properties for liquidation.

Conquered and weary, legions of wayward music enthusiasts ask, “Where do we go now?”

And like a shimmering light of hope, Amoeba Records shines in a landscape of super centers and big-box stores.

Since 1990 Amoeba Records has sustained the curious appetites of music aficionados all along the west coast. Founded in Berkeley, California, an all American town known for its egalitarian ways, the super store is a strong supporter of independent music and legendary artists who paved the way. As big or probably bigger than most large record stores (28,000 sq. ft.), nobody rivals Amoeba’s collection, not in size or in variety.

Amoeba is committed to serving the community as well, not just its music needs but for more noble causes like rebuilding the Gulf Coast, saving the rain forests and donating profits to a slew of charitable organizations. Its community ties and amiable staff, emanate a warm mom and pop feeling for customers; only mom and pop are not the only ones running the place. At any given time there can be a staff of over 40 people working in the store, all very knowledgeable and eager to assist you.

The best reason to visit Amoeba Records, at least once in your life is to check out the unparalleled prices. New cd’s can be marked down as low as $10 and most used cd’s are much cheaper. Wanna check out a free concert? Call or check their marquee for in-store performances as well.

A Slice of Brazil in Koreatown

By Bill Karz • Apr 23rd, 2007 • Category: green.

Just when you think you’ve had enough, the spear of meat approaches for the 10th time. What do you do?

Those who are “glutton” for punishment, like me, accept the generous offer.

Who cares if the Top Sirloin is your favorite…you have to try the Garlic Chicken that the next table over is raving about. And even if you may not be a huge fan of bacon wrapped anything, it sure sounds a lot better when it’s smothered over filet mignon.

At M Grill in LA’s Koreatown, a $31 all-you-can-handle smorgasbord will keep you satisfied for at least two days. As a seasoned eater, I’m telling you…don’t load up at the salad bar - just enough greens to make mom happy - save room for the Churrasco.

Although you may not have the opportunity to get wheel-barreled out the front door, if you walk a block down the street, you can catch the Metro. The restaurant is conveniently located catty-corner to the Wilshire/Western stop along the Purple Line.

Forget about the price of gas/parking. Save your money for the meat.

What do you think?

I’ve seen this Metro advertisement almost every day since I started riding regularly in October of last year. However, I am still baffled.

Today, I finally snapped the photo.

I’m not exactly sure what to make of this ad. Is the black guy the undercover? If so, which one…the younger guy in the front row with a polo? Or, is it the older blue-collar gentleman in the back? It could never be the Asian businesswoman, or could it? The white guy’s too obvious.

WICKED Good Hotel Packages

By Bill Karz • Apr 19th, 2007 • Category: green.

Since its opening in February at Hollywood’s historic and dazzling Pantages Theatre, the Tony Award-winning musical WICKED has been a sold-out, box office-breaking phenomenon. Now, LA is partnering with 12 hotels to offer Special VIP WICKED packages that guarantee VIP tickets and a great place to stay.

The musical is in LA once again after a seven-week, sellout engagement at the Pantages Theatre in summer 2005. From June 2007 to March 2008, visitors will be able to purchase a hotel package and stay at one of a dozen top LA hotels: Beverly Garland’s Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza Beverly Hills, Fairmont Miramar Hotel Santa Monica, Hilton Los Angeles Airport, Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotel, Mosaic Hotel in Beverly Hills, Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Sheraton Universal Hotel, Sofitel Los Angeles, Sportsmen’s Lodge Hotel and Wilshire Grand Hotel.

WICKED has been called one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The musical has already broken the Pantages Theatre house record for the highest grossing show for the week ending March 4 (and that includes The Producers). Ticketmaster’s recently released Top Ten Most Requested Events of 2006 ranked WICKED #1, the first time a theatrical production has made the list.

LA’s WICKED is a spectacular production packed with glitz and glamour, a wonderful story and memorable songs. The show stars Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty as Elphaba and Glinda. Both actresses appeared in their roles in the Broadway production of WICKED.

WICKED: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, imagines another side of the classic story. Before Dorothy went to OZ, two other girls made their way to the Emerald City: the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch, Glinda.

WICKED has returned to the city where it was developed, written and had its first readings. And to the city where the 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, was made.
