Say “YIASOU” to the LA Greek Fest!

By John Boudouvas • Sep 3rd, 2008 • Category: Giveaways, culture., eat/drink., news., sport., weekend.

If you’ve never been to the LA Greek Fest on Pico/Normandie near the Byzantino Latino Quarter, you don’t know what you’re missing. The food is fanstastic, the OUZO and Greek beer is abundant and the dancing will get you kicking your heels in celebration. With over 20,000 visitors over the Sep. 5-7 weekend, the Greek Fest is one of the best around. Enjoy authentic Gyro sandwiches, famous Greek Honey donuts, souvlaki dinners and more. I’m so into it, that I’ll be pouring draft beers at the beer booth this year, so come by and say “YIASOU”!

Oh…and don’t be surprised if you see some celebs. Tom Hanks and his wife are honorary MC’s again this year and the Mayor loves to come out and enjoy the Greek tunes.

Pack your sleeping bag and running shoes, the Nike+ Human Race takes place tonight at the Los Angeles Memorial coliseum. The 10k race featuring 12,000 runners starts at 8:31:08 p.m. Why the late start? LA is just one of 25 global cities hosting the event. As the final leg of the global marathon, Los Angeles will send off runners after the race to the anthems of Kanye West and Common.

Jerry O’Connell, Brian Austin Green and Tiffani Amber Thiessen, among many others, will be participating. In addition, Nike athletes Lisa Leslie, Brandi Chastain, DeLisha Milton, Khadevis Robinson and Sarah Reinertsen will also be in attendance. American Idol judge, Randy Jackson, will be the host of the night.

VeeV Winner!

By Bill Karz • Aug 7th, 2008 • Category: Giveaways, news.

Posted by Anonymous from Playa del Rey, CA:

“Nothing calls for a night of absolute intoxication like an epic 2 hour journey home with the usual cast of characters, unique to LA’s public transit system, after a week of work that left my spirit dejected. Not even the sight of a poor motherless child could’ve made me feel less sorry for myself. I’d seen better days, but opening that bottle of whiskey last Friday changed the outlook on my entire weekend, and after a third cocktail I was out the door and on my way to the club. $50 dollars in the hole and only 6 hours later… (or was it 8? I don’t know, someone told me i fell asleep at the bar) I woke up on an air mattress with breakfast on my mind and dinner from the night before smeared all over my shirt.

I had hit rock bottom; and for some reason I was okay with that. In fact, I even had a good laugh about it all. Who cares if I acted like a complete fool at one of LA’s most pretentious clubs in front of LA’s most superficial crowd. It takes a man of strong core values to not give a damn. At some point you’ve got to lose all shame to learn what it’s dignity really feels like. After regaining orientation I straightened myself up and had me an egg sandwhich, and then barfed again.”

Tell a Tale, Win a Bottle of VeeV!

By Bill Karz • Aug 4th, 2008 • Category: Giveaways, eat/drink., shop.

Send in your best Los Angeles tale that involves alcohol and Los Angeles Nomad will select the winning story, publish it and send you a bottle of VeeV.

Though I wouldn’t call myself an alcohol connoisseur, I would have to say the story of VeeV is extremely appealing and the taste is supposedly intoxicating.

Started by two brothers, VeeV is the world’s first acai spirit (which only grows in the Amazon and has 57% more antioxidants than pomegranate). Having visited South America a few years ago with my brother, I can tell you Acai is just one of the amazing “ingredients” you can find in the Amazon.

According to VeeV officials, VeeV has a taste similar to a dark berry with a hint of chocolate.

Veev is Green:

The company donates $1 for every bottle sold, which goes back to the rainforest where the acai berries used in their product are grown.

Everyone in the company either drives a hybrid, or is carbon-neutral, and VeeV’s distillery is the only one in the U.S. that gets at least 25% of their power through wind generation.

*You can buy VeeV at bevmo.com or sample it at one of many bars, lounges or restaurants in LA, including Katsuya, Green Door, Goa, Beso, Hotel Bel-Air, Bella, Social Hollywood, Redwood Bar and Grill, Sushi Roku, X Bar at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Stone Rose Lounge at the Sofitel Hotel, Seven Grand, Parc, Palihouse, Opera, One Sunset, among many more.

*Age verification is required. You must be 21 to participate.
